Welcome to the Australasian College of Sports Physicians

The ACSP is an organisation of physicians committed to excellence in the practice of medicine as it applies to all aspects of physical activity.

Founded in 1985, it is the professional body representing sports physicians in both Australia and New Zealand. It conducts an annual scientific conference, produces a scientific journal and is involved in both training and assessment of sports physicians.

ACSP was successful in achieving recognition of Sports Medicine/Sport and Exercise Medicine as a specialist medical discipline in Australia in 2007. The discipline was recognised in New Zealand in 1999. ACSP conducts the only specialist level clinical training program in sports medicine and sport and exercise medicine in Australasia. The training program culminates in the award of a Fellowship in Sport and Exercise Medicine.

Ministerial Announcement

Decision on Recognition of Medical Specialties

The former Minister for Health and Ageing, the Hon Tony Abbott MHR, decided in 2007 that a case had been made for recognising the discipline of Sport and Exercise Medicine as a medical specialty. This followed advice on the matter from the AMC. This completed Stage 1 of the AMC recognition process.

An application for accreditation of specialist level training and education programs in this discipline i.e. Stage 2 of the AMC recognition process, has now been completed and the College is awaiting the final determination from the current Minister for Health and Ageing, the Hon Nicola Roxon.

AMC Accreditation Submission

The Australasian College of Sports Physicians lodged a submission with the Australian Medical Council in April 2008, seeking accreditation as an approved provider of training and assessment in the newly recognised specialist discipline of Sport and Exercise Medicine. The documents that comprise that submission appear here in full and are available for viewing by all interested parties.

In addition, the successful specialist recognition submission is available and provides additional background information on the discipline of Sport and Exercise Medicine.

All documents are in pdf format.
